Deposit Rinses

A deposit rinse deposits proteins on the surface of the hair. They do not contain ammonia or peroxide and as such, they are not damaging and there is no risk of over-processing. Deposit rinses wash out in 8-10 washes. Depending on how often you wash your hair, you should only do a deposit rinse once a month or once every couple of months. They are great for temporarily repairing cuticle damage and porosity issues. The effect is thicker, stronger, shinier hair and less breakage.

Deposit rinses are known as colour rinses, cellophane or semi-permanent colour. They are available in several different colours and as a clear rinse.

These rinses are usually done after shampooing but prior to conditioning. Follow the directions on the packaging. Popular brands of colour rinses include Elasta QP, Matrix, John Frieda, Clairol, Paul Mitchell and Giovanni.

Remember that deposit rinses act like protein treatments. Too much protein can cause breakage. Always follow your rinse with a moisturising deep conditioner.
