Hair Care Dos and Don'ts

So you've made the decision to start taking proper care of your hair. To help you on your healthy hair journey, here is a list of dos and don'ts.

By following these rules and guidelines, you will reach your goal in the shortest possible time (taking into account your rate of hair growth) and with as few setbacks as possible. Keep in mind that each of us have different hair types and differing hair needs - always "listen" to your hair. If something is not working for you, change it and find something that does work.

Do
  • Wash your hair at least once a week.
  • Be gentle when you wash your hair. Use shampoo on your scalp and gently massage it through your hair in the direction of hair growth.
  • Deep condition your hair at least once a week.
  • Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. These are gentler on your hair.
  • Moisturise and seal your ends daily.
  • Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf at night.
  • Incorporate light, medium or heavy protein treatments into your regimen as needed. Protein allows the hair to hold moisture.
  • Wear protective styles often.
  • Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and take vitamins and/or supplements if needed.
  • Trim your hair every 8-12 weeks to get rid of split or damaged ends.
Don't
  • Pile your hair on the top of your head and rub vigorously when shampooing. That causes your hair to tangle!
  • Use shampoo excessively. Consider using the co-wash method instead (see definitions).
  • Towel dry your hair by rubbing your towel back and forth. Place the towel around your head and allow it to soak up excess water. Do not rub! Better yet, allow your hair to air dry.
  • Use grease/hair food/petroleum based products on your hair and scalp! They block your pores thereby inhibiting growth, and keep moisture out of your strands, leading to dry hair that breaks.
  • Comb or brush your hair too often. Use your fingers to gently detangle your hair.
  • Comb or brush your hair when it is wet unless you head is covered in conditioner.
  • Wear hair styles that create tension along your hairline.
  • Allow your hair to brush against your clothing too often. This encourages split ends.
  • Sleep on a cotton pillowcase with your hair uncovered. Cotton draws moisture out of your hair. Use a satin or silk pillowcase.
  • Use heat styling tools excessively. Limit your use to once a week if you have strong, thick strands, and once a month if your have weak or thin strands.
