How To: Maintain a Healthy Scalp

Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp. Clogged pores lead to slow, thin hair growth or no growth at all. To grow healthy hair, it is important to ensure that the pores on your scalp do not clog up and are not covered by dead skin. Keep your scalp clean and flake free by using the following techniques:

  • When shampooing, wash your scalp not your hair. Your hair will be cleaned by the run off from your scalp. Concentrate shampoo on your scalp and use the pads of your fingers to clean and massage your scalp. Do not scratch your scalp with your finger nails or a comb! That can cause damage to your scalp and can result in slow growth or hair loss.
  • Do not use a comb to scrape dandruff flakes of your head. This can damage your scalp and lead to hair loss.
  • Do not grease your scalp with petroleum based products such as 'hair food". Petroleum is not absorbed into the scalp and leaves a greasy layer on your skin. It clogs pores and will slow down your hair growth and over time, it can lead to hair loss.
  • Use only natural oils on your scalp. Natural oils contain nutrients that nourish your scalp, do not clog pores, may irrigate (wash out) pores, and are absorbed into the scalp. Gently massage the oil of your choice into your scalp once or twice a week. The process of massaging also stimulates blood flow to your scalp thereby promoting hair growth. Popular oil choices for scalp massages include castor oil, peppermint essential oil, tea tree essential oil,  rosemary essential oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil. Remember to use a few drops of essential oil in a carrier oil as they are potent and can cause burns and damage if used directly on the skin or hair.
