Oil Rinses

The main purpose of an oil rinse is to provide slip so as to make detangling hair easier. It also provides nourishment and shine to hair, combatting dryness and dullness.

Not to be confused with a hot oil treatment or an oil pre-poo, an oil rinse is done after shampooing or co-washing but before conditioning. This is so that the conditioner removes any excess oil on the surface of the hair. Here's how to do an oil rinse:

  1. Shampoo or co-wash your hair and rinse.
  2. Saturate your hair with a natural oil of your choice.
  3. Let it sit on your hair for anywhere from five minutes to an hour.
  4. Rinse well with warm water.
  5. Follow with conditioner (deep or light condition). Rinse.
  6. Proceed as usual.
