9 Steps to Grow Back Your Hairline

The hairs that form the hairline, edges and nape are always particularly fragile and thin, regardless of race and hair type. If you're a relaxed head, you have probably experienced a thinning hair line at some point. More so if you have had extended periods of braid extensions, weaves, cornrows or ponytails.

A thin hairline is far from attractive and limits the hair styles that you can wear.

The good news is that with a little tender loving care and plenty of patience, you can grow your hairline back. The exception is if the hair follicles have been damaged beyond repair. If you have bald spots that are smooth and show no signs of hair growth, then it is unlikely that the hair will grow back. Your best course of action would be to seek medical advice - visit your family doctor or see a dermatologist.

For mild cases of thinning hairline, follow these steps to nurse your hairline back to health:

1. Baby your hairline, edges and nape. Treat them very gently.

2. Refrain from brushing and combing that hair. Use your fingers to gently smooth the hair down. Try the scarf method of laying the hair around the edges down if you prefer a sleek look.

3. Keep that hair especially moisturised and seal in the moisture with a natural oil. At the same time, you must maintain your protein-moisture balance too using protein treatments.

4. DO NOT under any circumstances have micro braids put in, or wear any other style that will put tension on the hair.

5. Try to alternate the side of your head that you sleep on.

6. ALWAYS wear a satin or silk scarf or durag to sleep. As a bonus, also use a satin or silk pillowcase. I personally used a velvet head band (the kind used as a sweat band) for further protection before tying my satin durag over my head. This did wonders for my nape and edges!

7. Massage your scalp daily to stimulate circulation and promote hair growth. You can use a natural oil to do your scalp massage. Recommended oils include carrier oils like castor oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil, and essential oils like tea tree oil, peppermint oil and rosemary oil. Use essential oils sparingly together with a carrier oils as they are very strong and may burn the scalp if used alone. One or two drops in a spoonful of a carrier oil is sufficient. Also add flowers of sulphur powder (available from pharmacies). Your scalp massage mixture should not contain more that 5% of sulphur. Read about the benefits of sulphur for scalp here.

8. Do not chemically treat the hairline, edges and/or nape until the hair is in a healthy state. If texture becomes a problem, relax the hair every other relaxer to give it a chance to grow out healthy.

9. Eat well, exercise, take your vitamins and drink plenty of water.

Hope this helps! Try it out and leave a comment to share your experiences.

  4. I find that using oils mentioned above really really works. Also just pamper around the hair line with your fingers while being gentle. It is hair maintenance. And one to grow on.

    1. Hi Travis. If the methods above don't help grow your hair back, it's best that you see a dermatologist who will assess the condition of your scalp and perhaps prescribe some kind of steroid cream that could help stimulate the hair follicles. Let's hope your hair loss isn't permanent.
